Simple Website Changes Are Not Always Simple

Some website changes sound straightforward when you first describe them.

“Could we make the navigation work like this instead?”

At that point, the requirement can appear to be little more than moving an element, changing a behaviour, or adjusting a layout.

Then you start looking at what is happening underneath.

An existing website already has structure, styling, dependencies, responsive behaviour, and years of accumulated decisions built into it.

Understanding those things usually has to come before changing them.

Start by Understanding the Existing Website

We recently encountered exactly that situation.

We knew what we wanted the navigation to do.

But before deciding how best to change it, we first needed to understand the existing HTML structure, CSS, and behaviour.

That investigative stage matters because changing the wrong thing can solve one problem while quietly creating another.

Good website development is not simply about making something appear to work.

It is about understanding why it works.

AI Can Accelerate the Experiment

AI proved particularly useful during this stage.

It helped investigate what was happening, explore alternative approaches, and turn ideas into code we could quickly test in the browser.

That shortened the distance between:

idea → experiment → observation

Instead of spending large amounts of time manually developing every possible approach, we could explore possibilities much more quickly.

Working Once Is Not Working Properly

But an idea functioning in one browser window does not mean the problem has been solved.

Each approach still needed testing across different screen sizes, layouts, and behaviours.

Questions still had to be asked.

Does it work on mobile?

Does it interfere with another element?

Does it behave consistently?

Does it actually solve the original problem?

Those are not simply coding questions.

They are design and judgement questions.

Human Judgement Still Defines the Solution

AI helped us move from idea to experiment remarkably quickly.

But deciding what we wanted to achieve remained a human decision.

Deciding whether an experiment genuinely worked remained a human decision.

And deciding when we had reached the right solution remained a human decision.

That is where AI becomes most useful in website development.

Not as a replacement for understanding, but as a way to accelerate the process of investigation, experimentation, and refinement.
